Prerequisites:
You can create a Timings report by following our guide. Once you have the Timings report, follow the steps below to analyze it.
📊 How to Read a Timings Report:
Now that the report has been generated, you can open it. You will be presented with one of two variations.
Note that this guide describes how to analyze a Timings v2 report, which is generated from PaperMC server types. If your report does not look like the one shown below, you likely have a Timings v1 report generated by Spigot.
1) Check the Server TPS (Ticks Per Second):
Go to the "Avg" tab under the results bar and select it.
Next, check the value called "Minecraft::Full Server Tick." If it is above 18 TPS (be sure to check the value inside the parentheses), your server is not experiencing consistent tick-related lag. The lag may be due to latency issues. To address latency-related lag, consider changing your server's location.
2) Check the Entity Count:
Too many entities can consume a lot of your server’s processing power. To check this, go to "Regions" --> "Count" and expand the world option. Here you will find the total number of entities per region.
If there are more than 2000+ entities present on your server at the same time, this can result in poor performance.
3) Check the Average Player Count:
Players, as entities, consume valuable resources to process their actions on the server. Therefore, having too many players online simultaneously can negatively affect your server's performance. This is more common in cases where your server may not have enough RAM. If there are more than 20 players connected to your server per GB of RAM, we suggest upgrading your server to reduce player-related lag (this can vary depending on the server type).
To check the number of players in the selected region, go to "Regions" --> "Count" and look for the "Player" value.
4) Addressing Alerts:
PaperMC Timings reports will alert you if some configurations are not optimized or are outside their normal values. For example, in the report below, we can see that the report alerted us that the server is not using Aikar’s flags and also provided a resolution. The errors may vary, but they always contain a cause and a suggestion on how to resolve the issue.
📝 Conclusion:
In rare cases, you may find that you cannot identify conclusive evidence of what is causing lag on your server.
You can also simply upgrade your server to a higher plan, which may instantly resolve your issues. You can learn more about upgrading/downgrading plans at any time.
If your server continues to experience lag, you can contact our expert support team, providing your Timings report in a ticket. We’ll be happy to take a look and help you find a solution to your lag issues.
