While Minecraft in its standard version offers many exciting experiences, one of the most thrilling aspects of the game is the ability to add mods. Mods allow you to take gameplay to a whole new level, adding new blocks, items, and even dimensions. However, adding mods isn’t as simple as placing them in a folder and starting the game. Minecraft Forge, a modding API, must be installed to unlock access to thousands of these mods. Although it's only available for the Java Edition, the process is straightforward. With this in mind, we’ve created this PixelHost tutorial to help you get started.

📥 Downloading Minecraft Forge

  1. Visit the official Minecraft Forge website.

  2. In the menu on the left, find the Minecraft version you want to use.

  3. Once selected, click the Installer button for the latest or recommended version.

  4. Save the file in a secure location, as you will need it shortly.

Note: If you need a specific version of Forge, press the Show all Versions button to see a list of all available versions and choose the Installer option from there.

🖥️ Installing Forge

With the necessary .jar file in hand, you’re now ready to install Forge on your Minecraft client. If you’re having trouble opening the file, ensure that you have the latest version of Java installed.

Windows

  1. Locate the Minecraft Forge .jar file and open it.

  2. In the installer, make sure the Install client option is selected.

  3. Confirm that the installation directory is correct, then press OK.

  4. After a few moments, you should receive a successful installation message.

macOS

  1. Find your Forge .jar file and open it.

  2. If the file cannot be opened, go to System Preferences, followed by Security & Privacy.

  3. In the General section, find the application and press Open Anyway.

  4. Once opened, verify that the Install client option is selected.

  5. Make sure the installation directory is correct, then press OK.

  6. In a few moments, you should receive a successful installation message.

🚀 Accessing the Profile

You should now be ready to select your Forge profile and then press Play to start! If your profile doesn’t appear, go to the Installations tab at the top of the launcher and check the Modded box near the top right.

🛠️ CurseForge App

In some cases, you might want to use the CurseForge app to install and use Minecraft Forge. This app allows you to install any version of Forge with just a few clicks, simplifying the setup process.

  1. Download and install the CurseForge app for your operating system.

  2. Inside the app, press the Create Custom Profile button.

  3. Enter the desired name and Minecraft version.

  4. Set the game type to Forge and optionally choose a specific version of Forge.

  5. Press Create to complete the setup process.

  6. You can now select your custom profile and press Play.

❗ Common Issues

  • Java/JDK error when opening the .jar file: This usually means Java is not correctly installed on your system. Ensure you have the latest version installed. If the problem persists, try restarting your computer and attempt the installation again once it has rebooted.

  • Unidentified Developer Error on macOS: By default, macOS doesn’t allow files from unidentified sources to be opened. Go to the Security & Privacy tab in system settings to allow the file to open. This option will appear after the file fails to open once, allowing you to restart it normally and continue with the Forge installation.

  • Can’t find my modded profile in the launcher: In some cases, your modded profiles may be hidden in the Minecraft launcher since they aren’t directly supported by Mojang. To make your profiles appear, go to the Installations tab at the top of the launcher, then check the Modded box. This will allow all modded profiles to appear and be selected for play.
